Description of Task to be Performed:

AnaVation is seeking an experienced Modeling Data Engineer – Ontologist to join an exciting work program. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the design, development, and evolution of formal ontologies to represent complex domains, entities, relationships, and concepts to include the adaptation of proprietary data formats that capture real world entities in realistic, transportable, and explanatory data models. Additional responsibilities include developing changes to the data model to support continually evolving system and information requirements. These models must be able to support current and future enterprise applications system design, by capturing and communicating with all relevant systems the changes to the data model at consistent, and regular intervals consistent with the software development life cycle of the enterprise applications. The candidate will also be required to interface directly with data architects, software developers, and cross-functional teams to understand their data needs, provide expert guidance on semantic technologies and knowledge representation to ensure that the data model is able to capture the use cases that the software systems are responsible for. This position is currently hybrid (mostly remote, with up to two days per week on-site with our customer in Lorton, VA). Remote status is subject to change at the customer’s direction, but is expected to continue. This position requires an active Top-Secret clearance and the ability to obtain SCI access with a CI polygraph.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or related field of study
  • Experience working as an ontologist within a federal law enforcement or Intelligence Community agency environment
  • Experience creating and managing data models, ETL development, and data warehousing
  • Software languages and software system development experience (Python, C#, and JavaScript)
  • Familiarity and experience with search query languages (SQL, No-SQL)
  • Knowledge of common data storage formats (JSON, XML, CSV)
  • Familiarity with the software development cycle
  • Extensive experience building unit tests
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Digital forensic domain background.
  • Normalizing data accounting for multiple organizational and operational concerns.
  • Experience handling complex and conflicting customer requirements.
  • Knowledge of data governance and data quality frameworks.
